L-Theanine’s Amazing Health Benefits

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves and in small amounts in some species mushrooms. It was discovered as a constituent of green tea in 1949.

Able to cross the blood–brain barrier, L-theanine has reported psychoactive properties. L-Theanine has been studied for its potential ability to reduce mental and physical stress, improve cognition, and boost mood and cognitive performance in a synergistic manner with caffeine.

The combination of L-theanine and caffeine has been shown to promote faster simple reaction time, faster numeric working memory reaction time and improved sentence verification accuracy.

This synergistic effect with caffeine is what led us to incorporating it into Memento.  Now you can fully enjoy your coffee and get the calm focused attention it provides.

Stress reduction

Five randomized-controlled trials with a total of 104 participants found L-theanine reduced stress and anxiety in people who were experiencing stressful situations.

Another study found that it increased relaxation without causing drowsiness and reduced resting heart rate.  Researchers found that L-theanine decreased anxiety and improved symptoms for people with anxiety.

Focus and cognitive performance

In 2016, researchers reviewed the existing research on the benefits of L-theanine and concluded that this compound could benefit a person's mental and physical health. They noted that it seems to have neuroprotective effects, which improve brain function.

Paired with caffeine, L-theanine may help increase focus and attention.  A 2013 study found L-theanine and caffeine helped a group of young adults to focus better during demanding tasks.  The study’s participants also felt more alert and less tired in general.

Better sleep quality

Numerous studies indicate that L-Theanine improves duration and quality of sleep.  Researchers in one study found that L-Theanine greatly improved sleep in animals and humans.

Immune System support

L-theanine may support the body in fighting off illness. Several studies have suggested that taking L-theanine could boost a person's immune system, making them less likely to get common colds or the flu.  Its potential anti-inflammatory effects could also help fight illness.
